Boating Safety on Lake Travis

At Keep Austin Wet Watercraft, safety is not just a priority. It is the foundation of everything we do. Over the years, we have put thousands of groups on the water, and the number one thing that makes every trip successful is making sure everyone stays safe and has a great time. Lake Travis is an incredible place to be, but like any body of water, it deserves respect. Here are our top safety tips to ensure your boat rental is as safe as it is fun.

Life Jackets Are Non-Negotiable

Every boat in our fleet is equipped with US Coast Guard-approved life jackets for all passengers. Texas law requires children under 13 to wear a life jacket at all times while the boat is underway, and we strongly recommend that all passengers, regardless of age, wear one when swimming in open water. Even strong swimmers can be caught off guard by fatigue, currents, or unexpected conditions.

Stay Hydrated

This cannot be stressed enough. The combination of sun, heat, wind, and physical activity on the water leads to dehydration faster than most people realize. Bring plenty of water and encourage everyone in your group to drink consistently throughout the day. A good baseline is at least one gallon of water per person for a half-day rental. If you are consuming alcohol, alternate each drink with a glass of water.

Sun Protection

The sun on Lake Travis is relentless, especially between 10am and 4pm during summer months. Apply broad-spectrum SPF 50+ sunscreen before you arrive and reapply every two hours, or more frequently after swimming. Wear hats, sunglasses, and UV-protective clothing when possible. Sunburn and heat exhaustion can turn a great day into a miserable one, so take sun protection seriously.

Designate a Responsible Operator

If you are renting a self-captained boat, make sure the designated operator stays sober and alert throughout the trip. Boating under the influence (BUI) is illegal in Texas and carries serious penalties. Even on captained boats, having a sober, responsible member of the group helps ensure everyone’s safety and well-being.

Know the Rules of the Water

Lake Travis has speed limits, no-wake zones, and right-of-way rules that all boaters need to follow. Our team provides a safety briefing before every rental that covers the essentials. Pay attention to buoys and markers, maintain a safe distance from other boats and swimmers, and always be aware of your surroundings.

Weather Awareness

Texas weather can change quickly. Before heading out, check the forecast and be prepared to head back to shore if storms develop. Lightning on the water is extremely dangerous. Our team monitors weather conditions and will advise you if conditions are expected to deteriorate.
